In the Beginning

Construction of the layout began on March 8, 1997 when Kent Williams and Dave Montgomery came over and we ripped 3/4" cabinet grade plywood into 4" and 2" wide strips to make 'standardized' 6' modules. The lower level benchwork is 18" wide and the upper is 15" wide. Several modules were custom, such as the ends of the peninsulas, and the North Fork and Clio Bridges. Walls, lighting, carpet, lower benchwork, and most of the mainline was in after the first year, at which time progress slowed due to a new job and lots of worldwide travel for me.

Starting point for trackwork was installation of the helix, which determined track elevations for both levels. The 6-level, double-track helix was moved from my previous layout in California - I'm not building one of these again!

Here, Kent and Dave help with the first mainline tracks on the lower level heading west under what is now the North Fork Bridge and into Oroville. Note the helix is now hidden behind the wall behind us.
